Way back when it was still technically "winter" here in Texas we went to visit Beets Cafe. It was one of the coldest days of the year and downtown near where the Mister works was packed so we strayed a bit to find where to eat.
Honestly, raw food was not on our radar since it was freeeeezing and nothing in the cafe is served hot, expect the herbal teas. But Beets doesn't fail to exceed our expectations and we had yet another surprisingly pleasant raw food experience. And I say surprising because I honestly didn't expect to be so satisfied with a cold "raw" meal in the middle of winter, mere hours after a hard freeze.
As soon as we sat down we ordered two piping hot teas which warmed us right up. They serve you the tea in your own little colorful kettle which is really cute. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture of it because we ended up ordering our usuals and I don't want to bore you all with pictures of the same food.
Boring I know, I should branch out and try different things on the menu but there is something so satisfying about what I already know I like.
Even though our meal left us both fully satisfied (as always! I'm always surprised by how filling the meals here are!) we decided to be two little pigs and order a first for us: raw dessert! We had plenty of hot tea left in our little kettles and wanted to wash it down with something sweet.
We ordered a slice of chocolate cheesecake.
This cheesecake is raw, vegan and gluten-free but it is soo delicious and yes, rich tasting and and creamy!
The richness is a good, clean feeling richness. Instead of feeling bloated or sluggish, you actually feel good eating it because you know it's not made with crap but with good, healthy and clean ingredients. You're not going to roll out the door feeling like an overstuffed butterball with dessert guilt to boot.
It is very chocolate-y but the flavor is more like a rich, earthy cocoa rather than milk chocolate.
The creamy-ness instead of coming from cream cheese or some other fatty thing like that is a nut base. And it is so surprisingly creamy, almost like a mousse!
And as you can see, our piece was served with a little flower which I'm pretty sure is edible but we didn't end up eating it. We polished off every last bit of the cheesecake and I'm not kidding when I saw we practically licked the plate clean.
It was the the apex of our meal I must say and a great company to our hot tea.
I really have to say every single time we've come to Beets we've left fully satisfied and never feeling gross. I like that feeling of being able to eat a full meal and leave feeling great and not gross. Because of that i think Beets is easily one of our top favorite restaurants.

What I wouldn't give for a slice of cheesecake right now - especially one that looks that scrumptious!
