Recently Wendy's has been promoting their new "natural cut fries with sea salt" with much hype. The commercials make sure to state how great and better tasting these new fries are and take the trouble to mention that they have the actual potato skin still on them.
This article however reveals what's really gone on behind this makeover and I have to say, much of it sounds very gross.
While the fries do maintain their skin they are also sprayed with sodium acid pyrophosphate, a chemical that keeps the fries from turning brown after being dipped in two oil baths (the one at the factory and the one at the restaurant). Yuuuuck!
Furthermore fast food frying oil contains dimethylpolysiloxane, a silicone based chemical that helps keep the frying oil (usually soy and canola, both highly GMO foods) from getting yucky and foamy.
I'll write it again: a silicone based chemical! It's no wonder fried foods like french fries are suspected carcinogens.
So let's add it up shall we?
- Frying what could be an otherwise healthy potato isn't the most ideal cooking method of choice but I'll concede that in moderation it can be a delicious and an acceptable splurge.
- Add to that, frying GMO potatos (GMO meaning genetically modified/altered organism)
- Add to that, spraying said GMO potato with chemicals to keep it looking pretty and appetizing.
- Add to that, the oil used to fry said potato comes from GMO soybeans and GMO canola
- Add to that, chemicals to keep that GMO oil functional and usable for a longer period of time.
I don't know about you but I am officially grossed out.
This is yet another reason why I'm so glad that gluten-intolerance helps me to avoid fast food restaurants! I am one who definitely prefers quality over convenience so I'm not going to settle for chemical laden, genetically altered food when my baked home fries are so much tastier!
