I really love Glutino cookies but I'll be honest, I haven't tried them all. However the ones I have tried I really like.
It used to be that it was hard to find a decent gluten-free cookie. The consistency was just different and not satisfying like regular cookies: too tough, too crumbly, you couldn't dunk them because they'd fall apart.
Luckily though good gluten-free cookies are becoming easier and easier to find.
First up is the lemony wafer cookies.
If you missed wafer cookies like I have, these are a welcome treat. For some reason I wasn't expecting too much from these but I was pleasantly surprised to find that these have the same crispy and flaky consistency as their wheat counterparts.
These type of wafer cookies are usually served with ice cream and this gluten-free version can easily stand up to a creamy sidekick.
Another thing that I like is that they smell very lemony. I like lemon so for me it's great to have a cookie that tastes like something. (There are also strawberry and chocolate flavors.)
The cream however tastes just "sugary" to me but maybe that part is just me because my sense of smell/taste has never been the greatest.
These wafers are about 150 calories for 3 wafers.
Next up is the vanilla creme sandwich cookies.
These are also a welcome surprise for those who have missed Oreos and other sandwich cookies.
In fact I'd say that these, just like the wafer cookies, are great replacements to the wheat counterparts.
What I like is that the cookie resists dunking in milk. Sure it gets soggy like Oreos do, but that's the thing, it gets "regular cookie soggy" not "gluten-free cookie soggy.
From these I don't really get a vanilla-y flavor but I never got a "flavor" from Oreos either and these definitely satisfy my sweet tooth either way.
These cookies come in chocolate too.
Serving size is two cookies at 140 calories.
You can find Glutino cookies in most health food stores but I have yet to see them stocked in my regular supermarket. Perhaps that will change soon?
