I mentioned a few days ago that I took a week off for a stay-cation, since my Mister had to use or lose his vacation time for this year. We took that time to chill out around town and visit the hill country for a couple of days.
Contrary to how it may seem, we made an effort not to eat out too much that week but we kind of chopped up the time off and started early on the Friday before so this is about one week and about 2 ½ weekends' worth (a little creative calculation on my part there, 2 ½ weekends is 3 Saturdays and 2 Sundays).
One of the places we hit up early on was Zen, a chain Japanese eatery. I'd never been there before but people told me they liked it plus they have an adaptable menu that lets you pick and choose exactly what you want in addition to a gluten-free menu.
The down side is that since it's kind of a "build-your-own-meal" type of place, picking things from the menu can get a bit confusing since you have to glance up at the regular menu and then down at your gluten-free options.
The counter person was very helpful and funny so if you have any questions or confusions they happily assist you.
Unfortunately for me, I ended up not to jazzed about my meal.
Truth be told I can't even remember what it is I ordered, except that it was some version of the "build-your-own-bowl".
Maybe it's because I wasn't really in the mood for asian, maybe because they had rolled up one of the doors even though it was seriously chilly, maybe the menu was confusing for me and I was so hungry I ordered quickly without really considering the options, maybe Japanese is different from the typical Asian fusion I was used to, I don't know but for some reason I just didn't enjoy my food with much gusto.
Don't get me wrong everything tasted okay but I guess it wasn't what I was expecting and for some reason it didn't "hit the spot".
This is the Mister's plate and if I remember correctly he got a variation of The Schoolgirl with a gluten-free sauce substitution.
I wish I could be more jazzed about this place but for some reason it just didn't hit the spot in a satisfying way. But being the open-minded eater that I am, I'm willing to give it another try in the future.
And of course if you're in the mood to try something new, some thing Asian that's not the same old thing, definitely try it! (But if you like the "same old Asian" then maybe it's not for you?)
